Tank Requirements - Quick Overview

If your aquarium is new, it may not be fully cycled yet. Newly set up tanks benefit from being fully cycled before adding fish, this process helps your new fish stay happy and healthy. Depending on your tank size, cycling can take up to 4–6 weeks or even longer, but there are ways to speed up this process to just a few days! If your tank has already been running for a while, you’re already good to go! Not sure what cycling means? Check out our guide on The Nitrogen Cycle for an easy explanation on what it is, and why it is important for your aquarium to thrive.

Frequently Asked Questions - Orange Spot Bristlenose

Will my Bristlenose Pleco clean my tank?

Bristlenose Plecos will help control algae growth on glass, décor, and driftwood, but they are not a substitute for regular tank maintenance. It's also important to note that the algae naturally growing in your aquarium is typically only one species, which alone does not provide a varied or complete diet. Bristlenose Plecos require supplemental feeding with algae wafers and fresh blanched vegetables such as cucumber and zucchini to ensure balanced nutrition and long-term health. They also produce a significant bioload, so good filtration and regular water changes remain essential regardless.

Can I keep an Orange Spot Bristlenose with other Bristlenose Plecos?

Yes, Orange Spot Bristlenose can coexist peacefully with other Bristlenose variants, though the same male-to-male territorial rules apply regardless of species. However, despite sharing the Ancistrus genus name, Orange Spot Bristlenose are a genetically distinct species and cannot interbreed with other Bristlenose variants. You can keep them together in the same aquarium without any concern of crossbreeding.

How many Bristlenose Plecos can I keep together?

Bristlenose Plecos can be kept in small to large groups, however for best results 1 male per 2 females should be kept per tank with multiple caves and hiding places.

Will my Bristlenose eat my live plants?

Bristlenose Plecos are generally safe with live plants. Unlike many other plecos, they rarely damage healthy plants. They may occasionally graze on softer-leaved plants if underfed, so ensure they are well-fed with algae wafers and vegetables.

Do Bristlenose Plecos need driftwood?

Driftwood is highly recommended. Bristlenose Plecos rasp on driftwood as part of their natural diet, aiding digestion and providing essential fibre. It also helps maintain their gut health and is considered a dietary staple rather than just décor.

How often should I feed my Bristlenose Pleco?

Feed once daily, ideally in the evening as they are nocturnal. Offer algae wafers, blanched vegetables (cucumber, zucchini, spinach), and occasional protein-based wafers. Remove uneaten fresh food after 24 hours to maintain water quality.

My Bristlenose is hiding all the time, is this normal?

Yes, completely normal. Bristlenose Plecos are nocturnal and naturally reclusive during the day. Providing caves, plants, PVC pipes, or driftwood gives them security and reduces stress. Increased activity at night is a good sign of a healthy, settled fish.

What size tank do I need for a Bristlenose Pleco?

A minimum of 75 litres is recommended for a single Bristlenose. For a pair or small group, 100 litres or more is ideal to reduce territorial behaviour and provide adequate territory and caves.

Are Bristlenose Plecos suitable for beginners?

Yes, they are one of the best beginner plecos. They are hardy, adaptable, peaceful, and provide a practical benefit by controlling algae. As long as water quality is maintained and they are fed a varied diet, they are straightforward to keep.

Do Bristlenose Plecos need a heater?

Yes. As tropical fish, they require a stable water temperature of 26–28°C. A reliable heater and thermometer are essential to keep them healthy long-term.

A Note on Our Fish:

Fish may vary slightly in colour, size, and pattern from those pictured or shown in images and videos. This is natural across all fish, whether bred in-house, locally sourced, or imported, as individual variation is part of what makes each fish unique!

Every fish is quality checked for health, behaviour, and appearance before leaving our fish room. Fish that are dispatched as juveniles will grow into their adult size and colouration over time with a good balanced diet and proper care.
