Air stones are one of those inexpensive accessories that make a genuine difference to water quality and fish health. We recommend them as a standard addition to any tank running an air pump, and they're particularly useful in breeding setups, hospital tanks, and any situation where you want to maximise oxygen levels without adding another powered filter to the setup.
Air stones gradually clog with mineral deposits and algae over time, which reduces bubble output and puts strain on your air pump. Soak in a diluted white vinegar solution periodically to dissolve mineral build-up, then rinse thoroughly in dechlorinated water before returning to the tank. Replace when output drops noticeably even after cleaning.
