Sponge filters are already one of the best filtration options for shrimp tanks and breeding setups, but this one takes it a step further. The Double Head Sponge Filter with Bio Media Compartments combines the gentle, air-driven flow of a traditional sponge filter with two dedicated bio media compartments, giving you mechanical filtration, biological filtration from the sponge surface, and an additional biological stage from whatever media you choose to run in the compartments, all in one compact unit.
The two high-density sponges trap debris and fine particles while protecting shrimp, fry, and small juvenile fish from being drawn into the intake. The dual media boxes (100ml total volume) can be filled with ceramic rings, quartz balls, or any other bio media you prefer, providing extra surface area for beneficial bacteria to colonise and supporting a more stable nitrogen cycle. The adjustable height (195mm to 275mm) lets you position the filter to suit your tank depth, and the 135mm base keeps it stable on the substrate.
Powered by an air pump via 4mm airline tubing (sold separately), it runs quietly with low-resistance airflow that won't stress sensitive livestock or create strong currents in a shrimp or fry tank. It can also be used as supplementary filtration in a medium to large tank alongside your primary filter, adding extra biological capacity and oxygenation without taking up much space.
A note on media: avoid fine or small-particle media in the compartments as it can block water flow. Ceramic rings and quartz balls work well. Do not overfill the media boxes.
Not recommended as the sole filter for large, high-waste fish such as goldfish or cichlids.

Most sponge filters give you the sponge and nothing else. The bio media compartments on this one are a genuine upgrade, particularly for shrimp keepers and breeders who want to maximise biological filtration in a small footprint without adding another piece of equipment to the tank. The double sponge head also means you're replacing one sponge at a time during maintenance, which protects your bacterial colony and keeps your nitrogen cycle stable.
Rinse the sponge in old tank water every 2 to 4 weeks depending on your fish load, never under tap water as chlorine will kill the beneficial bacteria living in the sponge. Before first use, rinse thoroughly in tap water to remove any manufacturing residue, but do not use soap.
When a sponge eventually needs replacing, don't swap it out straight away. Place the new sponge in your tank in a high flow area, or ideally right next to the old filter, for a minimum of 2 weeks before replacing the old one. 3 to 4 weeks is safer. This process is known as seeding, where the beneficial bacteria from your tank water and existing sponge colonise the new sponge over time. Once colonised, throw the old sponge away. Sponge filters usually last 2-3 years before needing replacing but this can change depending on tank size and how much fish you stock.
For the bio media compartments, rinse media in old tank water only when flow through the compartments noticeably drops. Avoid disturbing the media unnecessarily as the bacterial colonies living on it are doing important work.
