The ability to use these as a powerhead adds genuine versatility for aquarists who want to increase circulation without adding another piece of equipment. Internal filters run continuously, and reliability matters far more than saving a few dollars when your fish depend on them.
Service the filter every 2 to 4 weeks depending on your tank's bioload, or sooner if you notice a reduction in flow. Remove the sponge and rinse it in old tank water removed during a water change, never under tap water, as chlorine and chloramines will damage the beneficial bacteria colony living within the foam. Gently squeeze and rinse until water flow is restored, then reassemble the filter.
Clean the impeller and impeller housing periodically, as debris and calcium build-up are the most common causes of reduced flow and increased operating noise. While cleaning, inspect the impeller shaft for signs of wear or damage before reassembling.
Check the spray bar and venturi inlet regularly for blockages. These components do not house your biological filter, so they can be safely rinsed under tap water during maintenance.
If the filter becomes noticeably louder than usual, inspect the impeller before assuming the unit needs replacing. A dirty, worn, or slightly dislodged impeller is usually the cause.
Always unplug the filter before performing any maintenance or water changes.
