So what makes an external canister different from an internal filter or a hang-on-back? The canister sits outside the tank, completely hidden from view, and draws water through inlet tubing, passes it through multiple stages of filter media, then returns clean water back to the tank through an outlet. Because the canister is sealed and pressurised, water is forced through every layer of media rather than finding the path of least resistance, which makes filtration significantly more thorough. It also keeps all the equipment out of the tank, giving you a cleaner, less cluttered aquascape.
This model is suited to aquariums up to 90 litres and features four easy-access media baskets that let you build your own filtration stack, whether that's sponge, ceramic rings, activated carbon, or bio media. External canister filtration used to be something you only considered for larger tanks. The 400L/H changes that, bringing proper multi-stage canister filtration to nano and small tanks at an accessible price point. At 6 watts, it costs almost nothing to run, and the four media baskets give you real flexibility over your filtration setup, which is more than most filters in this size range offer.
As a general rule, clean your canister every 1 to 3 months depending on your fish load and how heavily planted your tank is. A good indicator is flow rate, when you notice it dropping, it's time for a clean. Always rinse sponges and biological media in a bucket of old tank water taken during a water change, never under tap water. Chlorine in tap water kills the beneficial bacteria living in your media, which can cause an ammonia spike and harm your fish.
