How the Giantz External Canister Filter Compares

⚙️ Giantz External Canister Filter with UV

  • 🧺
Multi-Stage Filtration: Uses multiple filter stages and media baskets to separate different stages of mechanical and biological filtration within the canister.
  • 📦
More Media Capacity: The external canister design provides dedicated space for multiple types of filter media, allowing you to build a filtration setup around your aquarium's needs.
  • 🌿
Keeps Equipment Outside the Tank: The filter body sits outside the aquarium, leaving more of the display area available for fish, plants and aquascaping.
  • 💡
Integrated UV Sterilisation: The built-in 9W UV lamp provides an additional treatment stage designed to target free-floating microorganisms and algae in the water.
  • 🔧
Customisable Media Setup: Accessible media baskets make it easier to choose, arrange and maintain different types of filtration media alongside the additional UV stage.

⚪ Basic External or Internal Filter

  • 🧺
Filtration Without Integrated UV: A standard filter can provide mechanical and biological filtration, but does not provide the additional UV treatment offered by these Giantz models.
  • 💡
UV Requires Separate Equipment: Adding UV treatment to a standard filtration system generally means purchasing and installing a separate UV steriliser.
  • 📦
Less Integrated Equipment: Filtration and UV treatment are handled by separate components rather than being combined within one filter system.
  • 🔧
More Components to Install: A separate UV unit requires additional connections, equipment and space within your filtration setup.
  • 🌿
More Equipment Around the Aquarium: Adding separate filtration and UV equipment can mean more components to accommodate around or beneath the aquarium.

Why We Stock It

Four-stage filtration, UV sterilisation, and a media kit included, all for a tank up to 500 litres. For aquarists who want a complete, ready-to-run external canister setup for a larger tank without having to piece together components separately, this covers everything in one package.

Care & Maintenance

Clean the spiral propeller and casing periodically to prevent heavy debris build-up, which can reduce flow and strain the motor over time. Always disconnect from power before handling. If the pump stops unexpectedly, check for blockages first, the built-in overheat protection will cut the motor if it runs too hot, which is usually a sign something is restricting flow. Clearing the blockage and allowing the motor to cool before restarting is all that's typically needed. Replace the UV globe annually or when you notice a drop in water clarity despite clean mechanical media. UV globes degrade over time and lose effectiveness before they stop working entirely, so annual replacement is good practice regardless of whether the lamp still appears to be on. UV replacement globes are available from most aquarium retailers or online. Check your model's specifications for the correct wattage before purchasing.
