Tank Requirements - Quick Overview

If your aquarium is new, it may not be fully cycled yet. Newly set up tanks benefit from being fully cycled before adding fish, this process helps your new fish stay happy and healthy. Depending on your tank size, cycling can take up to 4–6 weeks or even longer, but there are ways to speed up this process to just a few days! If your tank has already been running for a while, you’re already good to go! Not sure what cycling means? Check out our guide on The Nitrogen Cycle for an easy explanation on what it is, and why it is important for your aquarium to thrive.

Tank Mate Compatibility

✅ Compatible With

  • Tetras — Neon, Cardinal, Rummy-nose, Ember, and Bleeding Heart Tetras are excellent choices that occupy higher tank levels
  • Rasboras — Harlequin and Chili Rasboras are peaceful, compatible tank mates
  • Livebearers — Guppies, Platies, and Mollies work well, though monitor feeding to ensure Corydoras get enough food
  • Other Bottom Dwellers — Bristlenose Plecos and Kuhli Loaches are good companions with minimal conflict
  • Gouramis — Dwarf and Honey Gouramis are peaceful top-level fish that coexist well
  • Invertebrates — Amano Shrimp, Mystery Snails, Nerite Snails, and Rabbit Snails are generally ignored by Corydoras
  • Other Corydoras — Different species can be mixed, though for best social behaviour keep 6 or more of the same species together

❌ Avoid or Use Caution

  • Large or Aggressive Cichlids — Oscars, Jack Dempseys, Texas Cichlids, and Green Terrors can eat or fatally injure Corydoras
  • Predatory Catfish — Large predatory catfish will readily eat Corydoras
  • Tiger Barbs — Known fin and barbel nippers that can damage the delicate barbels Corydoras rely on for sensing food
  • Crayfish — Will catch and kill Corydoras, particularly at night when Crayfish are most active
  • Goldfish — Prefer cooler water than most tropical Corydoras and produce excessive waste. Note: Peppered Corydoras are an exception as they tolerate cooler temperatures

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Corydoras eat fish waste off the bottom of the tank?

This is a common misconception, no fish eats fish waste, and Corydoras are no exception. What they do excel at is stirring up debris and waste that has settled on the substrate, helping it become suspended in the water column where it can be picked up by your filter. They are also excellent at cleaning up any uneaten food before it breaks down and affects water quality. Regular water changes and good filtration remain essential for a clean and healthy aquarium.

Do Corydoras need to be kept in groups?

Yes, Corydoras are a shoaling species and should be kept in groups of six or more. In smaller numbers they can become stressed and withdrawn, spending most of their time hiding. In a group they will actively explore, forage, and interact together, displaying their natural behaviours and adding real movement and life to your aquarium.

What do Corydoras eat?

Corydoras are omnivorous scavengers that feed primarily from the substrate. High-quality sinking foods such as Xtreme Bottom Wafers make an excellent staple diet. They can also be supplemented with Xtreme Community Crave Flakes or Xtreme Wrigglers, provided enough food reaches the bottom before faster mid-water fish consume it. Occasional live or frozen foods such as baby brine shrimp or bloodworms are a great treat and help condition them for breeding.

What substrate is best for Corydoras?

Sand is the ideal substrate for Corydoras as it allows them to sift and forage naturally without risk of injury to their sensitive barbels. Any soft, fine substrate works well. Avoid sharp or coarse gravel, as it can damage their barbels over time, leading to infection and long-term health issues.

Can I keep Corydoras with other fish?

Yes, Corydoras are peaceful community fish and coexist well with a wide range of species. Avoid housing them with aggressive or large predatory fish that may harass or eat them. They occupy the bottom of the tank, so they pair particularly well with mid and top-dwelling species that won't compete for the same space or food.

What size tank do I need for Corydoras?

A minimum of 75 litres is recommended for a group of five Corydoras. They are active fish that appreciate open swimming space along the substrate, so tank footprint (length and width) matters more than height. Longer tanks are preferable over tall, narrow ones.

Do Corydoras need a heater?

Yes. Sterbai Corydoras are a tropical species and require a stable water temperature of 24–28°C. They are one of the more temperature-tolerant corydoras species, but a reliable heater and thermometer are still essential for long-term health.

Do Corydoras need a specific water flow?

Corydoras appreciate gentle to moderate water flow that mimics their natural river habitat. Good oxygenation is important, but avoid strong, direct flow that pushes them around the tank. A filter with a spray bar or a sponge filter works well to distribute flow evenly without creating excessive current.

Are Corydoras suitable for beginners?

Yes, Corydoras are one of the best beginner catfish. They are hardy, peaceful, easy to feed, and add real activity to the lower levels of a community tank. As long as they are kept in a group, provided with appropriate substrate, and housed with compatible tank mates, they are straightforward and rewarding to keep.

Do Corydoras need a lid on my aquarium?

Yes, a secure lid is recommended. Corydoras are known to occasionally dart to the surface to gulp air, which is a normal behaviour as they have a modified intestine that allows them to absorb atmospheric oxygen. While this is completely natural, an open top increases the risk of them jumping out of the tank, particularly if they are startled or the water quality drops. A well-fitted lid keeps them safe without restricting surface gas exchange.

A Note on Our Fish:

Fish may vary slightly in colour, size, and pattern from those pictured or shown in images and videos. This is natural across all fish, whether bred in-house, locally sourced, or imported, as individual variation is part of what makes each fish unique!

Every fish is quality checked for health, behaviour, and appearance before leaving our fish room. Fish that are dispatched as juveniles will grow into their adult size and colouration over time with a good balanced diet and proper care.
