The external canister design keeps the main filtration system outside the aquarium, giving you more room inside the tank while providing plenty of space for filter media. Water is drawn from the aquarium, passed through the filter media and returned to the tank, helping remove waste, support beneficial bacteria and improve overall water clarity.
Three easy-access media baskets allow you to customise your filtration to suit your aquarium. Use a combination of mechanical, biological and chemical media, such as sponge, filter wool, ceramic rings, bio balls or activated carbon. With a stackable basket design, each stage can be easily removed for cleaning or media replacement without having to dismantle the entire filter.

As a general rule, give your canister a clean out every 1 to 3 months, though how often you actually need to depends on how stocked your tank is, whether you have plants, and how much waste your fish produce. A good rule of thumb is to simply run it until you notice the flow starting to drop, then give it a thorough clean.
When cleaning, always rinse your sponges and biological media in a bucket of old tank water siphoned during a water change, never under tap water. Chlorine and chloramines in tap water can kill the beneficial bacteria living in your media, which can cause an ammonia spike and stress or harm your fish.
