When you're running a tank over 350 litres, options get limited fast. The Ultra gives you the flow rate and UV sterilisation to keep a large, well-stocked tank stable, with the same media flexibility and ease of maintenance as the rest of the PROTEGE range.
As a general rule, give your canister a clean out every 1 to 3 months, though how often you actually need to depends on how stocked your tank is, whether you have plants, and how much waste your fish produce. A good rule of thumb is to simply run it until you notice the flow starting to drop, then give it a thorough clean.
When cleaning, always rinse your sponges and biological media in a bucket of old tank water siphoned during a water change, never under tap water. Chlorine and chloramines in tap water can kill the beneficial bacteria living in your media, which can cause an ammonia spike and stress or harm your fish.
