The outlet is where your canister filter returns clean, filtered water back into the tank, and the shape of that outlet determines how water moves through your aquascape. The Hemispherical Outlet features a wide, dome-shaped bell that disperses the return flow broadly across the water surface, creating a gentle, wide current that moves water throughout the tank without creating a strong directional jet.
This makes the hemispherical outlet particularly well suited to planted tanks, where strong, concentrated flow can damage delicate plant leaves and disturb fine substrate. The broad, diffused current keeps water moving evenly across the tank, supports CO2 distribution to plants, and maintains surface movement for gas exchange without the turbulence that a more directional outlet would create. It's the outlet style most commonly associated with the classic aquascape aesthetic.

The wide, diffused flow suits the gentle water movement that most aquatic plants prefer, and the broad bell shape is visually striking in a well-set-up display tank. It's the outlet we'd recommend first for anyone setting up a planted aquascape.
Clean glass lily pipes regularly to prevent algae and calcium build-up, which reduces flow and detracts from the aesthetic. A dedicated lily pipe cleaning brush (a long, flexible brush sized to fit the pipe diameter) makes this straightforward. Soak in a diluted white vinegar solution to dissolve stubborn calcium deposits, then rinse thoroughly before returning to the tank. Handle with care during cleaning as glass pipes can crack if knocked against hard surfaces. Always disconnect from the filter before removing.
